  Is Coaching for you?

There was a time when coaching was limited to senior management or those who were on the fast track.  This has changed significantly over the years and coaching can benefit everyone.  It has become standard for all levels of an organisation.  Most importantly, coaching is not limited to organisations, and improving performance in that organisation.  The benefits of coaching are now clearly evident for the individual in their everyday life.  How this will look for individuals will differ from person to person but can range from a simple fitness plan to putting a plan in place to radically change the focus in their life.
Coaching is the type of thing that will come in and out of a persons life when it is needed.
So, is coaching for you? And is it for you now?
If you think coaching might benefit you, ask yourself the following questions.
  • Question 1: What is attracting you to coaching?
    • Am I looking to change something in my life? This could be a big or small change and relate to any aspects of your life.   You may not even know what you want to change but know that something has to.
    • Do I want a career change?  You need to look at your career choices long term
    • Do you have a goal that you need help with?  You may have a goal in mind and need to help in achieving it.  This can be anything personal or professional.
    • Do I need someone independent to support me and make me accountable?
  • Question 2: Do you want to change? This is a very important question and coaching is about transformation.  Some people run to change, others away from it.  You need to be very clear as to your attitude to change.
  • Questions 3: Are you willing to make the decisions, and put into action the things needed to support this change? Depending on your agenda, this could mean you need to make significant changes in your life.  This will not only impact on you but may also impact people in your life.  You may be very open to change but you may meet resistance to this change from those around you.  You need to be able to set boundaries so this does not hinder your progress.  A coach can help you do this.
You still here… Good.
  • Question 4: Having read about what coaching is, and the approach I offer, are you open to the coaching process?  This requires you to bring your true self to the table and be open to being challenged in a supportive way.  We will fully agree the approach at the start of the sessions so there will be no surprises.  Part of my approach does involve me challenging you but in a supportive manner.  This can be tough for people.  Part of the coaching process is to hold a mirror up to the person and you should be open to this.
  • Questions 5:  Do you have the time, energy and scope in your life for the coaching process.  Coaching with me is not about turning up for an hour session.  You need the commitment and time to action your agenda.  This demand on time could be considerable so you need to ensure that you have this time available.  If you are going through a big life event e.g. having a baby, it probably is not a good time to undergo the coaching process.

The questions above are to encourage you to think about coaching and if it is currently for you.  It's ok to be unsure about some of them and I am more than happy to chat with you about it.  I want to make sure that after the sessions you will walk away with what you wanted to achieve and, ideally, more than you expected.  It could very well be that coaching is for you but just not at the moment.  Coaching can be picked up at any time.
